DREAM WEAVER

In a world much like this, in the aftermath of their greatest war, humanity struggles to pick up the pieces. In their midst rise the dream weavers, a new race of people, perhaps one step up the evolutionary ladder, with the strange ability to alter reality as we know it. Outcast and feared, the dream weavers must find a way to blend in and hide.

Meanwhile, as the System grows in power and the Council begins to wane, a young man named Will Harrison runs away to enjoy what little beauty remains. Along the way, he is saved by a mysterious man named Kit. But there are people hunting them both, and Will must learn to trust the very people he has been taught to hate.

The following may contain some slight spoilers.

This is one of my more recent attempts at a series and it's both fun and difficult to write. A lot of planning actually went into this, then it started falling apart. I don't know which way I want the story to go, out of all the possibilities I can think of. I already have the ending - it's the getting there part that's confusing. I tend to get too attached to my characters and want them to go through as little suffering as possible - which just can't be done in this story.

This is, as a friend said, one of my more mature works. It certainly deals with themes that are darker and much more abstract than the ones in Remnants and Michael's story. I have to touch upon issues related to scientific ethics and morality. Of course, it's going to be slightly colored by personal opinions, but not too much, and Kit and Will usually represent opposing sides of an issue, so it more or less balances out. (Kit tends to take the sides I would, though.) I'm actually really happy about the dynamic between the two, and they're much easier to keep in character than certain characters I can name *cough* Daimira *cough* so it's really easy to write out the conversations. It's just...the plot...!

A word of warning, though. This series contains certain mature scenes. There's violence, swearing, and sex. Nothing very graphic, just a few paragraphs that basically say "they had sex" or Kit beating random System police up. Of course, if you're homophobic, I suggest you run away from here because Kit is bisexual. And no, it's not something that he can help being or which he can be "cured" of. It has to do with his very personality and the way he grew up.

The world of Dream Weaver is a futuristic/AU version of our world. However, I decided to go off the beaten path. Instead of robots and highly advanced machinery, I decided to focus on an aspect of human evolution. That is, human evolution itself. In their world, psychics, empaths, and mediums all exist and are accepted as real. The dream weavers themselves are a variation of them. While this means I have avoided the pain involved in thinking up a highly modern scenario (largely by creating a major war which destroyed most of their cities and which set technology back by a century), having to think of genetics, enzyme kinetics, and chemistry more than made up for it.

And boy all those lectures and biochem units came in handy here. Education's good for something after all!
